Antibacterial Soap
Human beings require means in order to keep themselves clean and free of infections which can be contracted because of their exposure to various external elements in course of the day. A simple bath is not enough to ensure that an individual becomes free of any form of contamination. Soaps are the basic ingredient required for keeping oneself clean and for maintaining basic hygiene. Since antiquity, historical evidences go to prove that soaps had been implemented for usage and in the initial period, soaps were composed out of natural components. At present soaps are available in the form of solid bars and also as liquids which can be used along with water to facilitate the cleaning process. The process of manufacturing soaps is also referred to as saponification. In the current times, various different kinds of soaps are available which serve different purposes. Antibacterial soaps refer to such soaps which contain certain ingredients possessing antibacterial properties which aid the destruction of any form of bacteria that may invade the body as a result of excess exposure to pollution and other external factors. However, it is necessary to point out at this juncture that antibacterial soaps are instrumental in killing the bacterial components but not viruses. The antibacterial components that comprise the antibacterial soap are usually chemical substances. Some of the most common elements that are used in forming antibacterial soaps include triclosan and alcohol which are considered to be extremely effective in dealing with the bacterial components within the body. However, in this case it is necessary to point out that excessive use of triclosan has also been found to be harmful. This is because the human body also contains certain beneficial bacteria which act as resistant and in case of excessive usage of chemical substances like triclosan can affect the functioning of these resistant bacteria.
There has been a lot of debate regarding the efficacy of antibacterial soaps as it has been pointed out by certain studies that the usage of a normal soap can act as a preventive against bacteria as well. One of the leading propounders of this thought has been the Food and Drugs Administration that has examined and found no evidence that the use of antibacterial soaps reduce infection. However, it has been countered by other researchers who have established the merits of antibacterial soaps. However, it is doubtless that soaps are integral to maintain the body’s hygiene.
