Creative Handmade Soap Packaging – A Competitive Advantage - October 30th, 2009

Why is handmade soap packaging important? With a lot of competition from other homemade soap makers and commercial producers, packaging is important to be able to attract people to buy your products. Remember that the soaps you make are more expensive than the commercial ones. The difference in cost lies in the extra effort, dedication, time and skill that you have put into making your handmade soaps which are the very reason why your clients buy your products. The best way to get an advantage over the competition is by using creative packaging.

There are a lot of ways of packaging your soaps, from the simple to the stylish, from rustic to the modern and even from the conventional to the futuristic. Whatever way you choose to package your handmade soaps, it is still how much time, care and effort you want to put into it that will matter.

Here are some packaging ideas that you can work on according to what impression you would like to convey to your clientele:

1.      For easy wrapping, you can use colored Japanese paper. However you should first wrap your soap in plain white paper because colored Japanese paper tends to taint the item especially when there is moisture. What you can also do is to use the same color of paper and soap to avoid any discoloration.

2.      You can use various wrapping papers with several designs to choose from or you can even design your own for that unique effect.

3.      You can use plain white paper and you can just stamp it with your logo or design.   Have a customized stamp made which you can use anywhere.

4.      You can use materials like scraps of cloth like tulle or organza or some indigenous material you may find.

5.      You can also use cardboard boxes you made yourself or corrugated cardboard can be used also.

6.      When wrapping or packaging your soap, you can wrap the entire soap or you can just use a strip of packaging and place it in the middle of the soap bar. You can also wrap half of the soap with the other half exposed.

7.      It is also important to decorate your soap packages with twine, ribbons, lace or strings.

8.      You can also design your own tags instead of plain price tags for your soaps and attach it with a twine, ribbon or string.

9.      You can also use your business card as a tag, design it in such a way that you can fold it in half making it look like a mini card. It will serve a dual purpose as business card and tag for your handmade soaps.

10.You can also have gift bags made using inexpensive but colorful cloth which can be reused by your customers. You can even embellish it with beads, plastic trinkets or charms.

Having a unique packaging for your handmade soap will make your products standout and will also show the effort and care you put into each item. A unique and eye-catching packaging will definitely have an edge over the competition.

Skin Care Awareness - October 29th, 2009

When you are aware of your skin care the right way, you can maintain a healthy and glowing skin all through your life.

You should be aware of the changes that occur in your skin, as well as the changes in the research and technology, so that you may evaluate, analyze, and change your skin care routines, these change should be based on the environmental conditions, your age, changes in your skin type, and advancement in technology and research.

As you grow older, your body natural skin maintenance mechanisms become weaker, and skin needs are changing, in the same time more and more facts are brought to light every day. You should be aware of the changing composition and nature of skin care products, so that your choice copes the supply to the needs the closest possible way.

Awareness also means knowing how to use your skin care products. Good practices include things like applying the moisturizers while the skin is damp(after cleansing), using upward strokes for better penetration of skin care products, removing the make up before going to bed, cleansing before moisturising or applying make up, using the correct amount of skin care products, etc. Thus, increasing the effectiveness of your skin care products is another focus area of serious skin care.

Awareness means being gentle with your skin. Things like over-exfoliation, use of low quality products, and application of strong-chemical based products, contact with detergents are all harmful to your skin. Some people have a wrong notion about serious skin care. For them serious skin care is – using large quantities of products as often as possible. However, this really is not serious skin care (and that’s why awareness is so important).

Awareness is also about visiting your dermatologist for treatment of skin disorders. Ignoring the skin disorders can be fatal for your skin and might lead to permanent damage. So, if the things don’t improve with over the counter medication, you should immediately visit a dermatologist. Self-surgery e.g. squeezing of acne/pimples is a big no (it can lead to permanent damage of your skin).

Awareness of skin care is more about precautions and preventive measures (than treatment). Awareness is about being proactive as well as reactive. In fact, we can say that ‘awareness of skin care’ is about being proactive about the needs of your skin so that the need for being reactive is reduced to a minimum.

Fast Electric RC Cars – The Basics of Choosing an RC Car - October 29th, 2009

How fast are they really?

If your interested in buying an electric RC car then you likely have a few questions regarding what you can expect from them. The main question that arises the most kind of speeds can it reach. Fast electric RC cars, the ones that are tuned just right and have a custom engine are still no match to a gas powered RC car. You can realistically expect speeds of 30-45 MPH on an average electric RC car and 50-75 MPH on a more advanced and properly tuned vehicle.

Battery Life/Run Time

Another factor that should be considered before making a purchase is the battery life. The battery life on an average RC car will give you 15 to 20 minutes of run time – full speed. Some radio control cars will deplete energy faster depending on accessories like working lights, alarms and the like. Check the battery charge rating on the specifications sheet to ensure it will run on a single charge according to your expectations.

Space Requirements/Where To Race

Unlike gas powered RC cars, electric RC cars can be driven/raced in apartment complexes due to being slower and the reduced noise levels no worrying about complaining neighbors! Most fast electric RC cars are built with standard street tires which are smaller and use less rubber. This is ideal if your in town and you’ll only be driving on pavement. If your into offroad racing then you will need to upgrade your RC car tires to a larger size with better tread for increased grip.

Your Local Hobby Shop

Hobby shops often have race tracks and strips of pavement specifically for racing RC cars – a great place to have some fun and learn some interesting things about RC cars from other enthusiasts. If you really decide you like the RC hobby world then you can even enter racing competitions that take place at these tracks and have a chance at winning prizes! Electric RC cars may be fast but they are no competition for a gas powered RC car so you may be out of luck unless they specifically have different competition groups for gas and electric RC cars.

About The Radio Control Signal

One final note pertains to the signal output by your controller. On cheaper RC cars the signal may interfere with other RC cars and you may experience dead spots where you lose control of your RC car. Better models use a specific signal “channel” for each type of RC car that is built – if the same two RC cars are together you have the option of switching to another “channel” so this does not happen.

Natural Skin Care For Men - October 29th, 2009

Generally, men do not take especially good care of their skin. Mostly they shave their stubble off in the morning, apply some aftershave and that’s just about it.

Some take it a step further and apply a moisturizer or toning gel after completing their shaving routine, but very few realize that taking good care of their skin is much more important than that.

You see, the integrity of the skin is vitally important to prevent harmful substances and micro-organisms from penetrating through the natural barrier of the skin. Few men realize that the integrity of the skin is compromised by shaving. Shaving removes the natural barrier function of the skin and allows potentially harmful ingredients and micro-organisms to pass through the skin, while nicks and cuts open the pathway into the blood stream.

Even when using an electric shaver, the skin is inflicted with microscopic nicks and cuts (they don’t have to bleed), which compromises the integrity of the skin. The process of shaving removes not only the protective acid mantel of the skin, but in addition, shaving removes several of the most superficial skin layers including some living skin cell layers and this renders the skin vulnerable.

This vulnerability is not just limited to attack from micro-organisms either. Once the natural barrier of the skin has been compromised, molecules that would otherwise have been excluded are now able to penetrate the skin and enter into the deeper layers of the skin and potentially the bloodstream.

Natural skincare for men that only contain safe, effective and 100% natural ingredients such as essential oils and herbal extracts will reduce this risk. Essential oils are known to have very powerful antiseptic effects, which help to keep micro-organisms from penetrating through the compromised skin and thus prevent infection and inflammation of the skin. Together with herbal extracts, these types of ingredients soothe, nourish and protect the skin and prevent dust, micro-organisms, etc., from entering the deeper layers of the skin.

In addition, using only safe and natural ingredients insures that potentially toxic ingredients, commonly found in men’s skin care products, are not a threat – simply because they’re contained in the products.

One also has to be mindful of the fact that no matter what type of razor is used, a range of bacteria and other micro-organisms will always be present on the blade, even a brand new blade. It is therefore very easy to introduce these organisms into the bloodstream. In most cases, the body’s immune system will handle this quickly and effectively, but by adding dangerous chemicals, contained in most commercially available skincare and shaving products, into the equation the skin can be adversely affected.

We are seeing an increase in skin sensitivities being reported by men that on closer examination frequently turn out to be allergic reactions to ingredients in the skin care products they are using. We have seen that once they start using 100% natural skin care products and follow a systematic skin care approach, these sensitivities tend to become less and their skin generally becomes healthier.

Specifically formulated natural skin care products for men are not jet commonly available, however, it is worth the effort to identify such products in order to avoid causing unnecessary skin problems and potentially dangerous skin infections.

Organic Vegetable Gardening For Beginners - October 29th, 2009

To be successful at organic vegetable gardening you must draw up detailed plans. The soil is your first consideration; how to make it rich and fertile, and how to prepare it so harmful pests won’t attack your vegetable garden. The two ways that organic vegetable gardening differs from conventional gardens is the usage of fertilizer and how to keep pests under control. Phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium are the three components essential to your organic garden.

For lush, green foliage you must have nitrogen. For strong roots and stems phosphorus is needed. And for the important protection from disease and brief cold snaps, potassium is a must. Let’s call them the big three. The big three are available in commercial fertilizers however they are synthetic. In organic vegetable gardening the big three are added in a much different way.

The best way of enriching your soil is by compost. Dig some pits in your back yard to start your compost from kitchen refuse. Use things like pine needles, corn stalks, leaves, carrot tops, fruits or vegetables that have spoiled, manure, egg shells and coffee grinds. Some organic gardeners use weeds in their compost but I do not recommend this for obvious reasons. As the compost materials decompose they release bacteria and fungi into the soil that you are preparing. The bacteria and fungi convert nutrients like nitrogen to ammonia and nitrates that will be usable for your vegetables. Use substances such as seaweed, potash salts, tobacco stems and wood ash to help make potassium in your compost. By making your own compost, you are controlling the mixture and balance to achieve the right combination for your organic vegetable garden.

To be absolutely sure that your compost has completely broken down and is now offering up the right balance, start working it into the soil at least two weeks before you plan on planting.

The pH in the soil must be right for healthy plants. Test your soil, if it has a ph of 0 it is very acidic, while a 14 is extreme alkaline. Of course a seven indicates neutral soil. To raise the pH of the soil inexpensively use ground limestone. An additional benefit of the limestone is that it contains magnesium something that most soils lack. If, on the other hand, you have extreme alkaline soil use sulpher to bring the pH down.

Pest control in organic vegetable gardening is also different that conventional gardening. In many conventional beds gardeners wish to eradicate all pests with pesticides. Many in organic gardening only wish to keep the pest population down so to have a balance in the garden. Obviously, whenever possible, plant pest resistant vegetables. In order for harmful organisms to grow, they need bright sunlight so keep thick mulch around the plants to deny the organisms that needed sunlight and to help hold moisture into the ground. If you find you have a heavy infestation here is a natural pest control formula:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

Follow this tips and you are on your way to raising a healthy and plentiful organic vegetable garden.

Happy Gardening!

Organic Gardening – The Pros And Cons - October 29th, 2009

Picture three ripe red tomatoes arranged on a wooden cutting board awaiting your pleasure. They’ve each come from a different source: can you tell which one was grown organically?

Two of the tomatoes were lovingly tended in backyards – one in a conventional garden and the other in an organic garden. The third tomato came from the supermarket, and it’s easy to eliminate from the guessing game.

The supermarket tomato is the pale red one the size and shape of a tennis ball. Bred for packing, shipping, and storing, (not flavor), this tomato was picked green, has traveled more than a thousand miles from farm to store, and has sat on the shelf for weeks — looking none the worse for wear.

Set this one aside. It was definitely not grown organically.

Two remain. For the sake of the game, they are the same tomato variety, let’s say Big Beef slicers. Bright red, they were just picked and are still warm to the touch from afternoon sun.

It’s not so easy to tell the difference in these; we have to look beyond the surface… literally. The quality of the soil from which they grew is the key element to naming the winner of this game: conventional tomato vs. organic tomato.

The chemicals in the fertilizers used in conventional gardens actually break down the health of the soil. Microbes that are necessary for making soil nutrients available to the plants are killed off.

The dead soil requires increasing doses of conventional fertilizer, and still the plants are malnourished, falling prey to insects and disease. Enter the deadly pesticides, sprayed liberally on the plant.

Now, the game is getting serious. One of the two remaining contestants in our tomato contest had better be carefully washed before being eaten; it’s been dusted with poison.

On the other hand, the organically grown tomato also had fertilizer applied to it, but this fertilizer was made from naturally occurring substances like bone meal, fish emulsion, and rock phosphate. These additions fed the soil and did no harm to the beneficial microbes that make nutrients available for use by plants.

Pesticides probably weren’t necessary because a healthy plant produces its own pest-resistant chemicals. But if there were pests, the organic gardener might have used a home-mixed spray of hot pepper and garlic, or something similarly non-toxic to humans.

There are a few additional techniques the organic gardener probably used, such as tilling in a cover crop to add organic material for the microbes and earthworms to decompose. This process results in a crumbly textured soil that holds moisture and allows the roots to breathe.

But even without the soil improvement from a cover crop, it’s fairly clear which tomato is better for health: the only nutrients that can be found in the fruit had to come from what was available in the soil. The organically grown tomato provides better nutrition.

What is not so clear is which tomato is better for flavor. A test of the ratio of sugar to acid might be made, but that isn’t a big issue. Both the conventionally grown and organically grown tomato are vastly superior in flavor to the poor tomato found in most supermarkets.

The original question in this tomato guessing game was whether you could tell which one of those ripe, juicy tomatoes on the cutting board was organic. Turns out that it’s hard to tell just by looking, or even just by tasting.

So, what’s the big issue? Mainly this: sustainability. Conventional growing depletes and eventually destroys the soil. Whereas organic growing techniques actually build and improve the soil.

In the end, the nutritious organic tomato contributes more to your health, and it is certainly better for the health of the soil from which all future crops will come.

Goat Milk Soap For Acne – Goat Milk Soap Recipes - October 28th, 2009

Handmade soap products are an excellent alternative to the mass produced alternatives you’ll find in the skin product section of your local supermarket or pharmacy, and goat milk soap is one of the best natural products for helping prevent and treat acne.

When you’re looking for a good goat milk soap for acne or other skin problems, make sure that it does not contain artificial coloring or preservatives and that it does contain 100% goat milk. Making your own goat milk soap for acne treatment is a good option, to ensure that you are only using the most natural ingredients.

So why is goat milk soap good for acne, as well as eczema and dermatitis? Research has shown that goat milk soap, when properly made, has a pH level close to that of your own skin and that it contains vitamins and other skin nourishing nutrients. The reason that it is beneficial in the treatment of acne is that the goat milk soap contains an acidic property which helps neutralize the bacteria while still allowing your skin to retain its moisture.

Goat milk soap for acne treatment can be handmade at home, using the cold process of soap making. This involves mixing lye and water with fat or oil, and adding this to the cold goat milk. For acne problems, using oils – palm oil, olive oil and coconut oil – in the soap will give it a moisturizing feeling. Once the soap mixture has been blended to trace, you can add fragrance oils or essential oils for scenting the goat milk soap. The soap is then poured into a mold to let it set, and after it has been cut into bars it is left to be cured for around 3 weeks.

Another way to make your own goat milk soap is to use the melt and pour method, where you buy the glycerin soap base instead of having to start from scratch with the lye solution. The soap base is melted and the goat milk is added, again with scented oils for fragrance.

As well as using goat milk soap for acne prevention or treatment, it can also be used to soothe other skin problems and is great for using on sensitive skin. Easy recipes for goat milk soap for acne, either using the cold process or melt and pour methods, are widely available and come in all shapes and quantities. If you are going to buy goat milk soap for acne problems, look for a genuine homemade soap and make sure it doesn’t have any unwanted additives.

Soap Marketing May Be Easier Than You Think - October 28th, 2009

Marketing anything is easier if you can find people who want to buy whatever you’re selling. Soap marketing is easy because so many people are interested in special soap products. Produce a special product and it will generate interest. Now how is the best way to start?

If you’re producing a handmade soap, you can sell your product dozens of ways. If you’re producing just small volumes, you will profit more by selling at something higher than wholesale prices. That means you need to find the end user and sell direct to the final customer. Otherwise your margins may be too narrow to really generate much profit.

You can find the final customer several ways. One way is to sell from your own shop, but that requires either a large investment or on-going rent. Either way is dangerous for a small scale venture. What about selling in a mall from a kiosk? That’s a way to contact many people, but maybe not that many. Plus you still face stiff rents plus the cost of the display.

Another popular soap marketing method is selling at craft shows. Craft shows can be part of many different events including fairs, festivals and shows of all kinds. The point is there are crowds of people there to look and buy from a gathering of crafted things. The beauty of marketing soap like that is you can sell a lot of products in a short time.

Not only is it an efficient way to move product, it provides leads for future sales. Who better to make future offers to than people who have already bought from you? Include sales material with each craft show order and some people will reorder from you. If you keep customer contact information, you can mail material to your customers. Mail out a little catalog offering to your customer list and orders will come right back at you.

Soap marketing using craft shows as the main sales tool is a fast way to build a business. If you sell a really quality product, your customers are the base for an on-going business. You can truly convert soap to cash with your customers’ help.

Herbs and Herbal Skin Care Products - October 28th, 2009

While natural ingredients include an entire range of produces derived from plant leaves, roots, bark, fruits, and even extracted oils, herbal skin care products derive their beneficial effects from herbs. Herbs are low-growing aromatic plants that can be used either fresh or dried; these include annuals (which must be seeded each year) as well as perennial herbs (which survive the winter to grow again in the spring). Usually, it’s herbs’ leaves that are used to enhance skin care products’ benefits.

The Herb Research Foundation classifies herbal & organic skin care products into one of four groups, depending on the herbs that the products include, and the scale of sale. The four groups are Ayurvedic, Chinese, General, and Commercial.

Ayurvedic herbs are the herbs used in India, including ginger, turmeric, and frankincense as well as pants that are less well known in English such as ashwagandha. These four, in combination, have been shown in texts to decrease rheumatoid factor and interleukins, which are the biological markers of rheumatoid arthritis activity.

It’s a little-known fact that Chinese herbs are seldom used alone, but are more often used in formulas of four. In Chinese herbal medicine, the formula is assembled just like the individuals in a royal court. There’s a King Herb that has the strongest effect, a Minister Herb that addresses the min pathology as well as a secondary pathology, and assistant herbs. Assistant Herbs can be helpful and strengthen the King’s effect, corrective and eliminate the King or Minister herb’s toxic effect, or opposing in order to decrease the King’s effect.

General herbs are those with entries in reference publications such as the Encyclopedia of Popular Herbs that describe their medicinal properties. The names of many of these will be familiar to you; you may have seen seeds to grow them in the grocery store, or you may actually have some of them growing inside or near by your house. And commercial herbs are those wholesalers sell in bulk.

Organic Soap Making Supplies and Materials - October 28th, 2009

In any soap making activity like organic soap making, the first thing you need to know before you start making your soap is what supplies or ingredients you need to have on hand. The supplies you will need to prepare will depend on the type of soap you are going to make. For making organic soap, you will need to prepare the following supplies:

Soap Base. A soap base makes soap making fast and easy. It is very handy and is usually used in the melt and pour process of soap making.   Just like raw soap, a soap base contains essential oils, oil fragrances and colorants. Soap bases come in different varieties such as glycerine, castile, goat milk, shea butter, cocoa butter and specialty bases like olive oil, honey and oatmeal. Soap bases also come in two forms: soap base bars and shredded soap base.  Lye. Lye is also known as Caustic Soda. It is used in cold process soap making where water and lard or fats are added to it. Lye comes in solid dry form such as flakes, pellets, powder, beads and in solution form and dissolved in water. Lye is a corrosive chemical and can cause burns and injury to the skin and blindness if it reaches the eyes. Carrier Oil. Carrier oil is also known as vegetable oil or base oil. It is used to dilute the essential oils and help these oils to get into the skin. Most carrier oils come from pressed vegetables, fruit seeds or nuts such as olive oil, grape seed oil, sunflower seed, avocado, canola (rapeseed), sesame, jojoba, sweet almond, pecan, walnut and macadamia. Essential Oils or Fragrance. Essential oils are also known as volatile or ethereal oils. They are extracted from plants and are extracted for their aroma or fragrance. They are used in combination with carrier oils to add fragrance to your organic soaps. Essential oils are extracted from various parts of plants:

·         Seeds – almond, anise, cumin, nutmeg

·         Flowers  – lavender, rose, ylang-ylang, chamomile, sage, geranium

·         Leaves - basil, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon grass, peppermint

·         Peel - orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit

·         Wood - cedar, sandalwood, camphor

Natural Ingredients. Natural ingredients are extracts or ingredients added to a soap base mixture to give the soap a unique and distinctive characteristic. There are several varieties of natural ingredients that can be used in soaps for different purposes as:  Exfoliants - oatmeal, poppy seeds, sugar, salt, corn meal Cleansing – grapefruit seed extract, milk Relaxant - honey, lavender, rosemary Moisturizer – shea butter, wheat germ, aloe vera, cocoa butter  Molds. Molds are the containers wherein the soap mixture is poured on and left to harden and take shape. Soap molds come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. There are also novelty soaps for special occasions and you can have molds customized for specific needs. Colorants.  Colorants are used to give color to your soap. Food coloring can be used as colorant.  Pigments and micas come in different colors. There are also earth tone metallic micas and glitters that can make add intensity to your soap and make it visually attractive. Equipments. Equipments such as stainless steel pots or pans, double boiler pans, mixing bowls, miller or blender, and a stove or microwave are some of the equipments you will need in making your organic soap. Utensils and safety equipments. You will also need goggles and rubber gloves for safely handling the hazardous substances such as lye. A weighing scale to measure your ingredients, plastic or stainless steel spoons for mixing, thermometer, pitcher, aprons and pot holders.

The above enumerated supplies are also basic requirements for making natural, herbal soaps and other kinds of soap.
