Lemon Is All-Around Beauty Aid
The oldest and simplest of all beauty aids is lemon juice. In ancient China the lemon was called Li Mung, meaning “beneficial to women.” The lemon, blossom and fruit in early days went into love potions, as well as secret formulas for guarding milady’s lovely looks. And through the never-ending search for beauty the lemon has found numerous uses. And now modern science confirms its value as a beautlfier. There is hardly a complexion fault or other problem for which it is not beneficial.
Squeeze the juice from half a dozen lemons at a time and strain it through a fine wire sieve or a cheesecloth into a clean jar that can be tightly closed. Keep the jar tucked away on a convenient shelf of the family refrigerator.
The healthful qualities of the lemon alone directly affect your looks. Nothing else is so full of vitamin C, which gives sound teeth, a clear skin, a good digestion. When you get up in t he morning add a tablespoon of lemon juice to half a glass of cold water and brush your teeth with it. Use as you would any other dentifrice. It hardens the gums, neutralizes acids and odors in the mouth, stimulates the flow of saliva and makes the mouth feel thoroughly clean.
After cleaning the teeth, drink two glasses of water to which the juice of a lemon has been added. It cleans the digestive tract, has a mildly laxative effect.
Perhaps the most familiar way of using juice directly as a beautlfier is as a rinse for blonde hair. It’s equally beneficial for hair of any shade. Lemon juice is not a bleach for the hair. It simply cuts away every trace of soap left on the hair, so its natural brightness and beauty shine through. Black hair develops a beautiful blue-black sheen after a series of rinses; auburn hair takes on a subtle coppery tone; white hair becomes alive and exquisite.
Shampoo the hair with bland liquid soap, giving it two good soapings and then rinse until the water Is perfectly clear. Add the strained juice of two lemons and rinse the hair in this. If you wish, though it isn’t necessary, the hair may be given another cool rinse. The lemon not only leaves the hair immaculately clean and bright, but also tones the scalp and makes the hair easier to set.
Use lemon juice to aid cleansing, to tone the skin, help prevent and eliminate blackheads, excessive oiliness and such faults. Wash the face thoroughly with water and soap, rinse with tepid water, then With clear cold water into which has been squeezed the juice of half a lemon. This removes every trace of soap that might cause irritation or chapping, leaves the skin in its normal state. Repeat the same routine at night.
Skin yellowed from the fading of summer’s tan? Then try this treatment: follow the cleansing with an application of lemon cream. Make it by stirring in a small amount of lemon juice, 1 teaspoonful to a 2-ounce jar of cream. Massage gently into skin of throat and face and leave it on for 10 or 15 minutes. Wipe off excess and give skin a brisk going over with lemon ice.
